GaN diode lasers have applications in many areas ranging from data storage to projection displays. In most cases, the use of blue and violet lasers is motivated by the short wavelengths, which allows strong focusing or resolving of fine structures in imaging applications.
The main challenge is to produce laser diodes with high output power and long lifetime. Both nature and crystal quality of the GaN substrate are key to guide the crystal quality of the active layers, hence the performance of the laser diode.
Active research and development is done on laser diodes, such as in blue-emitting VCSELs or in green lasers for RGB display.
